Holy Family, Heart Lake, Brampton kicked off its Black History Month celebrations at a service on Feb. 4. Bishop Peter Fenty (suffragan bishop, retired) was the guest celebrant and preacher. Highlights included a colorful flag procession, a talk by parishioner and liturgical artist Pat Fisher about the altar frontal she quilted that incorporates symbols of the Underground Railroad, and a children’s choir singing a traditional Nigerian song, “Ise Oluwa.” People wore attire from their countries of origin, many from Africa and the Caribbean, sang African-American songs “Sweet, Sweet Spirit” and “Revive Us Again” and enjoyed a Caribbean breakfast coffee hour. “It was a warm, energetic and Spirit-filled service,” says the Rev. Julie Meakin, incumbent.
